Culture they say is the people's way of life...
But nowadays are people really living their culture or mimicing other people's way of life for good or the opposite?

Culture is the core value of any population
It's a heritage passed on from one generation to another...

In the West African region particularly Nigeria and precisely in the South Eastern region dominated by the Igbos. New Yam Festival is their core cultural heritage.
This symbolical culture- new yam festival popularly known as "Oriri Ji Ohuru" is a festival that unites all Igbo population at home even at diaspora. The New Yam Festival is an annual event that occurs usually between August-September.

It is believed that the New Yam Festival symbolizes newness of which nature has sustained for them so that they do not starve and go malnourished...


In the ancient days, the people cultivate their hectares of farmlands in heaps and well selected yam setts are sown...


The farmers of course dominant by males are only permitted to sow yam setts while the females plant cocoyam popularly known as "Ede" along side with other vegetables...

During the harvest period, the first harvest is highly remarkable as different species of yam are being displayed by these great farmers.

The first harvest are taken to the king as homage. The king will accept and bless their gifts then flag off the New Yam Festival.

This period is usually a great ceremonial period for the Igbo inhabitants, as the aroma of Ofe Nsala , Ofe Ede, Ofe Ukpuukpa, Ofe Uchakulu, and all manner of delicacies from different homes and various kitchens fill the air.  The old, the suckling babes, the teens, the adults alike are found helping themselves with the delicacies in groups, with their friends and in the neighborhood.

The event is also made colourful as all and sundry wear their cultural attire of anamaa (Traditional wrapper), aligongoo (Native high heel), abubaa ugo (Eagle's feather), uli (camwood), nzu (native white chalk) all set out for the amaa obodo (village square) to watch wrestling which is a recreational sports for crowning the colourful event...

A typical igbo man understands this core cultural heritage. The core value it brings to the people is not only sharing but happiness and newness of yet a successful farming season...new yam festival is a symbol of growth, newness, love, unity and happiness...


This experience while growing up as a child can never be forgotten. It made childhood memorable...
